Aubade Archival Print
An aubade is a love song or poem that welcomes or mourns the arrival of dawn. While working on this illustration, Philip Larkin's poem "Aubade" came to my mind and would not leave. It is a mournful poem, the narrator lamenting the passage of time in the increments of hours and days that fall away so easily until there are no more. The narrator does not hide his fears from himself, but he also struggles with accepting that living is not forever. The fears the narrator feel are shared by many, and the ways in which we all deal with them are unique to our own personalities and circumstances. For this piece, I hope to capture a bit of the trepidation that sometimes comes over me when contemplating the passage of time.
